Since its inception, the School of the Americas has trained thousands of Latin American military officers from most of the Latin countries. They worked for regime change in their respective countries under the banner of a War on Communism.

Where regime change has occurred with its torture, killings, and disappearances, the resulting governments have failed to win over the populations. The result, as Machiavelli would have predicted, is a lack of continuity in leadership. Economic conquest also has had the effect of weakening the United States' position throughout Latin America.

With the George W. Bush administration, the War on Communism changed into a hot War on Terror. Following the attack on the World Trade Towers (symbol of financial dominance), the Pentagon (symbol of military dominance), and the failed attack on the White House (symbol of political dominance), the United States started overt militarily enforced regime changes: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

These forced regime changes have devolved into tribal warfare, genocide, and anarchy. As Machiavelli wrote, you cannot impose a republican form of government on a culture that has never seen nor understood self-governance. We should have understood that.
