Of course the famous literary heroes I have mentioned are male characters, and so is Falstaff.
But Virginia Woolf's life of creative mourning of loss strikes me as resembling the lives of non-violent resistance of the historical Socrates and the historical Jesus. Her creative life on non-violent resistance was heroic. She did not live the life of an anti-hero. On the contrary, she lived a heroic life of courage and resistance in the face of mental breakdowns.
