2. Companies reliant on imports: Businesses that depend on imported raw materials or components may face higher costs and reduced profitability. This was the case in the first Trump Administration when the farming and agricultural industries took a beating by the higher import costs of Chinese agricultural products.

3. Exporters facing retaliatory tariffs: Companies that export to countries imposing retaliatory tariffs may lose market share or face reduced demand. So, while Trump and Company's "made in America" is great, the problem is export sales to countries under his tariff regime that will make U.S. goods cost far more in their markets, thus depressing internal domestic sales in these countries. In short, U.S.-made goods will become uncompetitive.

4. Overall economic growth: Trade wars can slow economic growth. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that tariff-related uncertainty and costs have shaved 0.3% off of U.S. economic growth.

Global Impact and Unintended Consequences

Trade wars can have significant ripple effects on the global economy. First and most obvious is the disruption of global supply chains. As companies seek to avoid tariffs, they may restructure their supply chains, impacting multiple countries and industries.

Then there is the issue of currency fluctuations in that trade tensions can lead to currency volatility as investors react to changing economic conditions. Should this happen then the next phase in trade wars is the rise of geopolitical tensions. This can strain diplomatic relations and potentially escalate into broader conflicts. Finally, this climate can spawn economic inefficiencies. By distorting market forces, trade wars can lead to less efficient allocation of resources globally.

It's worth noting that the impacts of trade wars are not always straightforward. For example, while some third-party countries may benefit from trade diversion, the overall slowdown in global economic growth can negatively affect all nations. Economists estimate that the U.S.-China trade war will shave more than 0.5% off global growth. The bottom line? Nobody really wins in the long term.
