TRAPPED IN THE CUCKOO'S NEST: Donald Trump's 'Deep State' of Denial

"I can promise you," Comey somewhat cryptically added, "we will follow the facts wherever they lead."

Back into the Cuckoo's Nest

Comey's announcement, along with a series of policy defeats including: the twice-failed effort to implement his Muslim ban; the mutually-assured rejection (by both Democrats and Republicans) of Trump-care; and his inability to get Mexico to pay for his promised border wall, have made for a brutal period beginning in late January. During that span, trump's political chops were repeatedly chin-checked by Constitutional checks and balances on the powers of the presidency. And his response -- based on his boasts of the past -- was predictably off-script.

It turns out that the self-proclaimed "counter-puncher" slipped not a punch, but instead into a loose pair of his favorite Salvatore Ferragamo loafers, then grabbed his wife Melania tightly by her -- uh, "waist" -- and took off to what for donald trump is perhaps the warmest of places to sh*t; a venue packed with screaming supporters.

On March 22, just two days after Comey's announcement, trump rode Air Force One down to Louisville, Kentucky for a campaign-style "pep" rally. There, among the pomp, fanfare and vigorously vindictive, weirdly ironic chants of "lock her up," trump would spend a few hours ignoring the swirl of scandals and controversies building around his "presidency" to enjoy a mollifying evening of nostalgic escapism, cult-like adulation, and of course, persistent reassurance.

That Louisville rally -- like those staged by trump as part of December's post-election victory-lap tour-- provide the perfect settings in which his alarming hodge-podge of psycho-emotional insecurities and trivial hang-ups can be assuaged. They serve as a network of specialized eco-systems, environmentally-tailored to sustain fragile human psyches. They provide a warm, tight "enclosure" where his "Make America Great Again" ethos can profusely flower. It's where sympathy for all the "unfair treatment" he's received can be shamelessly cultivated; where he can bask in the sunshine of pointless standing ovations; wallow in ever-swelling waves of auto-applause and fully nurture himself through endless volleys of self-praise. It's the only setting where his belligerent, ego-centered displays of juvenile political theatre are able to fully blossom.

And it's just the beginning, folks. It's an easy wager that campaign style rallies are likely to become one of trump's standard responses to political and personal adversity throughout what remains of his "presidency."

That March 20th Louisville rally, for example, followed one he staged just a week prior in still-trump-friendly Nashville, Tennessee. That rally came on the heels of the recusal of Jeff Sessions from presiding over any Oli-gate-related investigations, and act that reportedly "infuriated" trump.
