What American colonists felt then is not alien to many. Plenty recognize the need for humanity to take quick and decisive action as colonists in the late 1700s did.
I believe we are past asking if something should be done about the previously mentioned trends, ideologies, systemic problems, etc. The question today should no longer be whether there is a need for a renewed struggle for independence; it should be how can Americans from the bottom-up become independent.
On this Independence Day, let's be good to ourselves. What history we do not know we should commit to learning. What history of American power we hold sacred we should take a moment to question. What history of American independence we take pride in we should find the courage and conviction to draw a line from then to now and connect to the current events of the day.
As the age old proverb goes, "To know and not to do is not know." If we know, then we must do.
If we claim to celebrate our Independence Day today, we all have an obligation to examine how independent we are from that which we depend on. We must confront our dependence and decide if that dependence should continue. If we find our dependence disconcerting, we must take action.
