With the Progressive Left isolated from all sides, it became much easier to discount the disquieting arguments they continued to rudely bring up. Soon, no one would listen to them for fear of being ostracized themselves. In fact, any argument or issue they championed became “dead on arrival” simply because of whence it came. The public, stirred up by the constant drum-beat of anti-dissent coverage in the media, began to call for the crazies to be locked-up.. “In the name of Humanity and for the safety of the Homeland!” These dirty lefties, along with the equally-dangerous Libertarians, should not be allowed to spew their poison and wreck all the good that the administration was trying to do for us despite the constant underhanded and unfair attacks. These “know-nothings” hated America… Why should we tolerate them? But the administration was “wise”; and called for “tolerance” and “leniency”. After all, these Lefties were powerless… Sad, deluded little people really;  unworthy of our greater concern. Just watch them, and report anything suspicious to our new Federal Police; who are there for your safety.

.

But the media’s campaign seemed to work too well. Later Historians guessed that the psychological ploy of creating an internal enemy was especially powerful and effective at that particular time of great economic hardship (much like Germany in the late 1920’s); perhaps even more effective than was anticipated by those who started it all. So soon, by “public demand”, certain laws were changed regarding public speech. And the internet, long a bastion of  dissent, was reigned-in with new legislation allowing our trans-national communications corporations to control access; freezing-out the undesirable elements of society… And “Making the Internet safe for our children”.
