Earlier this summer, after stubbornly holding out for years, I finally gave in and purchased a smart phone. Truth be told, I simply got tired of the dropped Wi-Fi connectivity that bedeviled my iPod -- often at the most crucial of times -- so I felt it was time to go "4G."

I've used that phone to -- among other things -- offer to my younger friends essentially the same kind of dire warnings about new technology that I got from my mom a couple of generations ago. Of course, it makes no sense using my phone to call them. The only way I can connect my thoughts to them, it seems, is by text.

So I do just that; texting warnings about how their over-reliance on texting and excessive smart-phone activity is likely to render them -- at least from a linguistic standpoint -- about as articulate as an arctic loon. And I always take care to ensure that my text is delivered using correct spelling and proper punctuation.

A typical response?

"I prolly ain't tryna hear dat right now U no I'm bout ta play "Assassin's Creed!"

Oh well, 'nuff said.
