GD: On Friday, June 24th, when the final results of the referendum were published, David Cameron did the honorable thing and resigned his premiership to make way for new leaders with fresh ideas who can take forward the process of extrication from the EU and finding a new identity for the country. Regrettably, the heads of the EU institutions, Donald Tusk, Jean Claude Juncker and Martin Schulz have not shown such dignity and acknowledgement of personal responsibility in the face of their collective failure to strike a deal with Cameron that could pass the test of public opinion. This is a sad commentary on the dilemma facing the various nations hoping that Brussels will consider evolving not towards more centralized power but towards greater transparency and democracy in its institutions.
In a splendid op ed article published in the June 28th New York Times, Marine LePen explained why, despite their habitual reluctance to see the British steal the limelight, patriotic French men and women today take their hats off to Britain for the bravery of its decision to safeguard its sovereignty and to reject autocratic and ill-considered rule from Brussels.
JB: Thanks so much for talking with me again, Gilbert. It was a pleasure.
