His all-seeing eyes focused for an interminable amount of time, but in reality, only a few seconds passed. I felt a powerful tug up and down my spine. I sensed something menacing in the shadows.
"Do me a favor." His fractured Fresno face fell. He slumped and looked away. His glance grew into a gravitas grief, and gave a glimmer of tears. "Don't tell anybody where this place is."
"Thank you, sir!"--I said, giddy with nervous relief--"You won't be sorry! I know there is more work!--The meek shall inherit--"
His glowering look froze my tongue. His eyes cut like knives between light and dark, and he took a step back. Blackness seemed to be creeping across the pearly path, and swallowing light.
