On
June 26, as he watched news that the U.S. Supreme Court had struck down a key provision of the
Defense of Marriage that prohibited federal recognition of same-sex marriages,
John knew what would be that one "perfect day" before he took his last breath.
On Thursday, John and his partner Jim Obergefell boarded a medical transport
plane that could accommodate his stretcher, and with a nurse on board, two
pilots trained in emergency medicine, and his aunt, an ordained minister, they
made the 70-minute flight from Lunken Airport in Cincinnati to Baltimore-Washington
International Airport in Glen Burnie, Md.
And
when they landed, in the cramped cabin of the jet, with Jim seated next to
John's stretcher, the couple turned to each other, held hands and exchanged
their wedding vows."
According to Pat Robertson, however, Jim should divorce
John to start a new life as a
confused straight person, then come to God and become un-confused. Love, commitment and devotion are irrelevant.
Irrelevance
So is Pat
Robertson irrelevant? That's what people keep saying - as they continue to
quote him, chastise him and, yes, even demonize him (of which I am totally
guilty). His "wisdom" is unrealistic, scattered, and contradictory.
But even in his addled capacity, he manages to infuriate and amuse. He shows us
just how righteous arrogance can degenerate into befuddled nonsense. He is
relevant.
Pat Robertson has yet to expound upon the Trayvon/Zimmerman situation.
Come on, Pat, give us those pearls of wisdom, your relevance depends upon it.
*Who can forget
Colbert's description of misogynistic Robertson as "eye pudding"?
