Patients with this type of seizure disorder usually suffer from epigastric sensations which would cause a very bad taste in the mouth. The solution is the use of sweets. According to Ayesha "the prophet enjoyed having Halva and honey" *25, Halva is a Middle Eastern sweet, made of dough, sugar and rose water.
One of the methods that patients use to ease the bad taste in the mouth is the use of toothbrush. At the time of Mohammed, toothbrushes were made of soft parts of the leaves of palm tree. Ayesha reported that the prophet brushed his tooth several times a day*26. He would wake up several times a night and brush his teeth. *27, and he would take toothbrush with him even during his trips and battles*28.
Ayesha reports that at the time of death, Mohammad pointed to a person who had a toothbrush in his hand. Ayesha asked him, if he wanted a toothbrush. When Mohammad nodded, Ayesha chewed on a toothbrush to make it soft and gave it to him. She relays that Mohammad used the toothbrush so vigorously that she had never seen before. *29&30
The epigastric sensation has frequent episodes of nausea. According to Azem Ben Fazl that he saw the prophet with a toothbrush in his hand and was making a sound like Gha Gha as if he was going to vomit but nothing came out*31.
It is common among these patients that they perspire profusely during the seizure. Both Ibn Saad and Al Bukhari report several Hadith indicating that when Mohammad looked like he was receiving a revelation he would heavily perspire even at cold nights*32&33.
One of the common symptoms of seizure is changes in facial features due to the pressure on facial muscles. According to Uyeda Ibn Assamit, when the messenger of God was receiving revelations, he looked afflicted and his face clouded*34.
Albukhari reports that when a follower wished to see the prophet during a revelation. Mohammad's friend called him to look inside of a tent. There he saw Mohammad wet with sweat and making noises like camels. *35
Interictal Personality Changes:
The changes in Mohammad's personality are quite obvious and documented. These changes were in the areas of hyper religiosity, hyper sexuality and aggression.
Changes in Sexual behavior: It is widely reported that Mohammad got married at the age of 25 to his first wife and that he was a virgin at that time*36. He was totally emotionally dependent on his first wife who was much older than him. He did not buy female slaves or have other wives as polygamy was quite usual at that time. When his wife died, the sadness was quite severe. Also, there were many political problems in his life caused by his polytheist enemies. His uncle who was his substitute father died a few months later. He had only a handful of followers who were getting tired of the hardship of Mohammad's vicious enemies and were getting out of Islam to be able to live in peace. After several attempts he was able to migrate to the city of Medina. At that time, he married to two women at the same time. The younger one Ayesha was 6 years old and Soudeh who was married before and older. Mohammad's frequent marriages, after age of 53 was totally different to his earlier life. Although, men usually become less sexual in older ages. He developed hyper sexuality.
According to Al-Tabari in the last ten years of his life, he married 15 women, took thirteen of them home, lived with eleven of them and when he died, he had nine wives at home*37. Mohammad built a house for himself, so that each one of his wives had a room. He used to sleep with one of them each night. His manner of chasing women was more similar to the behavior of an adolescent. It is interesting that in Islam a man can have four wives, except Mohammad, who received the permission from God to have as many wives as he wanted. Here is that revelation in The Quran:
33:50] O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is forgiving and most merciful.
When Mohammad was asked about his extreme desire for women. He replied "angel Gabriel came to me with a pot of earthly food. I ate from it and the food gave me the sexual potency of 40 men"38.
It is quite interesting to see how Mohammad's sexuality, at times, would get him into trouble as if he was13-year-old. It is peculiar that each time that sex caused a problem in his life he was rescued by a revelation from God. I will mention only one of these stories as there are so many of them.
Mohammad had a beautiful wife who was a Christian slave and was given to him by the king of Ethiopia, because the king knew that Mohammad liked women. Her name was Mariah (Mary). She refused to convert to Islam. So, Mohammad had built a house for her outside of Medina. One day when he came to his house in Medina, he sees Mariah is in his house alone. He took her to the room which belonged to another wife "Soudeh" and had sex with Mariah in Soudeh's bed. Meanwhile Soudeh shows up and raised hell. Mohammad promised to Soudeh that if she keeps this embarrassing situation to herself, he will divorce Mariah. However, Soudeh told everyone, causing a lot of embarrassment. So, Mohammad got upset and moved to a basement. At this time God comes to his help again:
66:1] O
Prophet! Why holdest thou to be forbidden that which Allah has made lawful to
thee? Thou seekest to please thy consorts. But Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful.
66:2] Allah has already ordained for you, (O men), the dissolution
of your oaths (in some cases): and Allah is your Protector, and He is full of
Knowledge and Wisdom.
66:3] When the Prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of
his consorts, and she then divulged it (to another), and Allah made it known to
him, he confirmed part thereof and repudiated a part. Then when he told her thereof,
she said, "who told thee this? "He said, "He told me who knows and is
well-acquainted (with all things)."
66:4] If ye two turn in repentance to Him, your hearts are indeed
so inclined; But if ye back up each other against him, truly Allah is his
Protector, and Gabriel, and (every) righteous one among those who believe, - and
furthermore, the angels - will back (him) up.
