During his adult life he was known to be an honest, quiet, religious and intelligent person. Around the age of forty he became more religious and used to go outside of Mecca to a small cave and pray. Sometimes he would be gone for a couple of days. Whenever he would come back to the city, he would do the rituals of walking seven times around the cubic structure in Mecca which is called Kaabe. At that time Kaabe contained 360 idols. Each idol represented one day of the Sumerian year which was believed to be 360 days. These idols belonged to different tribes of Arabia and were extremely respected and protected. *12

First Revelation

According to Ayesha Mohammad's favorite, youngest and smartest wife, the process of becoming a prophet began at the age of forty. The prophet was having dreams which would come to be true. Perhaps "Deja vu", which is common among patients with Geschwind syndrome. Then he became somewhat quiet and more religious. He would go to that cave for prayers very frequently*13. One night when he was praying in the cave of Hara, he had an unusual experience. He saw an angel who was very close to him, at the distance of two bows, and told him "Read". According to Ayesha*14 "initially when Mohammad saw the angel, he lost consciousness and fell on the ground and the angel revived him and wiped the saliva from his mouth". Mohammad was quite scared, he thought he has gone mad, or demons have got to him, he even thought of killing himself by throwing himself from the mountains. Then he saw the angel again, who was everywhere, wherever he looked, there was the angel. The angel introduced himself as angel Gabriel and told him that Mohammad is appointed as prophet of God at the level of Moses and Jesus with the difference that he is the last *15 Then the angel grabbed him and squeezed him so hard that Mohammad thought he is going to die. The angel repeated "read "Mohammad who was scared and was supposed to be illiterate replied I cannot read. The angel repeated the same behavior three times, and each time Mohammad would feel that he was going to lose his life until he received the first revelation of the Quran and that is when it all started. *16

96:1] Read! In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, who created
96:2] Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood
96:3] Read! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,
96:4] He Who taught (the use of) the pen,
96:5] Taught man that which he knew not.

The feeling of being squeezed is so common in epileptic patients that the creek came up with the term Seizure (being seized).

Mohammad's symptoms of seizure disorder.

1) Mohammad told others that his inspirations come to him in two ways:

a) Angel Gabriel talking to him man to man, and those he does not remember

b) Gabriel holds him and squeezes him to the point that he would feel he is going to die; and with something like the ringing of a bell. Those inspirations are written on his heart, and he would not forget them*17

These symptoms are obviously auditory and visual hallucinations. In a different occasion when he was about 53 years old, he had an encounter with Jennies (Jinn in Arabic) who talked to him and liked his words of the Quran and some of them became Muslim. This story is written in detail in Quran, we bring you the first two verses.

72:1] Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!
72:2] 'It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein: we shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord.

There are several other symptoms which provide evidence for Mohammad's seizures as well as his gradual character changes which is known as "Interictal personality disorder" *18

The condition of complex partial seizure used to be called "uncinated fits", or the illness of bad smell (olfactory Hallucinations). In a hadith reported by Ibn Saad*19 Mohammad said that "I did not enjoy anything from pleasures of life except women and perfume".

The excessive use of perfume is to cover for the bad smell in the nose. Ibn Saad also reports another hadith in which it is reported that" whenever one would go through an ally where there was a strong smell of perfume, one would know that Mohammad had passed through that street" *20

Although Mohammad is known to be very generous, "if he would get ahold of some perfume, he would never give it to others" *21. Ayesha who was very close to Mohammad reported that Mohammad liked his wives to use "dikare" which is a combination of Musk and Ambergris*22

Muhammad also hated bad smells. Albukhari*23 reports that Mohammad said people who have eaten onions or Garlic should not enter his mosque. He also relays that Mohammad did not like people who had yellow teeth, because their mouth smelled bad*24.
