Shamefully, the United States of America has more people in jail than any other country on earth" China is three times our size" we have three times the number of people in jail" disproportionately black and hispanic.

We have a broken criminal justice system which needs fundamental reform. (big applause)

...There is another issue that we don't talk about at all.

The tragedy in this country of youth unemployment.

What percentage of high school graduates between the ages of 17 and 20 are unemployed or under employed

White 33%

Hispanic 36%

African American 51%

In other words, as a nation, we are turning our backs on the young people of this country who want to go out, get a job, become independent, make some money, start a career. " and we're saying, no there is no job here for you. We have five and half million young people hanging out on street corners- all over America, without jobs and not being in school- and if anyone doesn't think there is a correlation between that and the young people in jail, you would be mistaken. It makes a hell of lot more sense investing in education and jobs rather than incarceration.

I would guess that the tuition at U of Chicago is pretty high but I would also guess that is cheaper to send a kid to U of Chicago than to jail. Let's get our priorities right.

He quotes Pope Francis

"As human beings and adults we need to understand that it is our moral responsibility to leave this planet in a way that is habitable and healthy for our grandchildren."

And on this issue the debate is over" There is virtually unanimous agreement that climate change is real, is caused by human activity. it is already causing devastating problems in our country and around the world.and if we do not get our act together those problems are only going to get much more severe"

We have the moral responsibility to work with China and India and Russia and countries all over this world in transforming our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy.

The good news is we know what has to be done".

We have made major progress in sustainable energy. We can do this.
