THE TRAIL BEGINS
Responsibility for investigating UFOs was assigned to the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, home of the Foreign Technology Division (FTD), where airborne materiel originating from Warsaw Pact Nations, as well as more distant and exotic locales, was researched.
ATIC was a field activity of the Directorate of Intelligence in USAF Headquarters.

This is the famous Air Force Regulation 200-2 (AFR 200-2). This version, dated 12 August 1954, is after the 4602nd Air Intelligence Service bSquadron (4602nd AISS) was brought in to assist the USAF Air Technical Intelligence Center with preliminary and field UFO investigations.
