Since the 1930s the United States has attempted to formulate its Latin American foreign policy in consultation with the individual nations of the hemisphere and with the Organization of American States. Yet the United States continues to exercise a proprietary role at times of apparent threat to its national security, and the Western Hemisphere remains a predominantly U.S. sphere of influence.
The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine: because the Monroe Doctrine forbade European use of force in the New World, the United States would itself take whatever action necessary to guarantee that Latin-American states gave no cause for such European intervention. This was a huge extension of the original tenets of the Monroe Doctrine.

Denouncing the "strangling" of the Venezuelan economy by sanctions against both the government and its leaders, and demanding the Trump administration allow the South American country to determine its own fate, pro-democracy protesters clamored through the streets of the District of Columbia demanding: "Hands Off Venezuela!" This all comes 42 days after Trump recognition of Juan Guaido as interim president, rebuking President Nicolas Maduro, who won re-election last May. U.S. sanctions on Venezuela's state-owned oil company followed, on top of the $30 million per day earlier U.S. sanctions have cost the country.
Code Pink's Medea Benjamin spoke at the Capitol Hill rally just before the crowds of protesters from all over the country began their clamorous march through the streets. She rejected Trump's claims that the "economic war" it has declared on Venezuela and the $20 million in phony "humanitarian aid" it sent last month were gestures based on any real concerns for the Venezuelan people.
The demonstration focused clearly on corporate media's promotion of Trump's Venezuela agenda as well as Trump completely ignoring the many Americans who have spoken against Trump's pressuring for regime change there.
Juan Guaido announced his planned national tour to mobilize his supporters before officially "reclaiming" power, but he also stated that he may be open to calling for U.S. military action.

As to the mendacity of American coverage on Venezuela, Jimmy Dore has nailed it (again!)
