Let's be clear. Santorum wants Casey as his opponent. he knows he can beat him. If that were not the case he could have done things to raise the visibility of Casey's opponents. Sandals, the other progressive in the race is clearly not a realistic candidate. He's a good man, with good issue positions, but he didn't do his job, building a real campaign organization. He ran some ads, paid a few staffers, but never built a grassroots base. His website alexa rankings show that even with the biggest media budget of the race, his penetration has been negligible. Santorum could have made life rough for Casey by engaging in dialogue that would have elevated Pennacchio's visibility, possibly forcing Casey to expend more resources. The Santorum campaign chose not to. I think it was because they saw that Pennacchio would be a more formidable challenger.
