Democrats must get together and develop a policy for Iraq that is in line with the real needs of the American people and, if possible, the Iraqi people. No more Americans should die to defend our corporate and military investments in occupied Iraq.

There is a concern about the control of the world ¹s remaining oil resources. Why do we not establish a international market that will make all oil available to everyone at fair prices? Why have we allowed Denmark and Japan to lead the world in the development of wind and solar power?
Why does the United States not have a wind generation industry to supply our own energy needs and those of the third world?

Democrats must oppose the increasing militarization of our nation. Many people came to this country to avoid military service only to see their teenage grandchildren hounded by military recruiters. Democrats must be concerned about the undue influence of the Pentagon and its suppliers on our foreign policy and our national priorities. The swollen military budget is changing our nation and wasting our resources. A peoples Democratic policy will work to reduce military spending and convert manufacturing facilities to producing tools for a healthier environment. We must strengthen the international agreements that prevent proliferation and end our own reliance on nuclear threats. The U.S. can contribute to long-term security by living up to our Millennial obligations to help the world ¹s poor.

The Declaration of Independence ends with ³we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor. ² To regain the trust of the American people, we must revive the dedication that gave birth to this nation - while we still have the freedom to do it.

Peter G. Cohen aerie2@verizon.net grew up as a Roosevelt Democrat. In 1968 he ran for Representative in Congress on an independent peace ticket. In '69- ¹70 he was Executive Director of the New Democratic Coalition of Pennsylvania, which went from 14 to 40 clubs during his tenure. He is now living and writing in Santa Barbara.
