Predators like Warren Jeffs, who sexually abuse children, marry adolescents, discard young men, and devalue women are despicable. The increasing salacious focus on "one man and many wives" imbues the Marriage Amendment with renewed political life. An interestingly timed debut for a practice a hundred fifty years old.
Last Thursday, May 18th, amidst the glare of Jeffs' polygamy, a United States Senate panel advanced a Congressional ban on gay marriage. The full Senate will address the Bill in the early part of June.
The goal now and through November is to stop the media and Rove from creating a polygamy fury for the Christian Right to glom on to. Polygamy may be unseemly and bizarre... but so are countless other issues in this nation. The more intensely the public scrutinizes this practice, the more ammunition they have to energize a wedge.
When foolish people act upon irrational fear, very bad things can happen. The real issues in our elections are much too important to ignore.
