Justice Anthony Scalia in the 2008 landmark case DC v Heller, writing for the majority, explicitly stated: ... "Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. Courts have routinely explained that the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose."
So, the law as it stands today, as interpreted by the conservative Roberts court, gives the individual the right to bear arms for self-defense, but that right is not unlimited, and is most definitely subject to government regulation as deemed necessary.
