Douglas 29% 12 EV 1.38 million votes
Breckinridge 18% 70 EV 838 thousand votes
Bell 12% 36 EV 590 thousand votes
Voter participation (81%..a record).
This data leaps out at us yelling "The Electoral College skews all voting! What a mad system!)
The guy with 40% fewer votes got 6 times more electoral votes; and the buy who got 60% less, got 3 time more Electoral Votes than Douglas, who nearly as many votes as the two combined.
So the guy who came in second to Lincoln did it entirely with WRITE IN VOTES. He didn't win but he showed that a robust national campaign can be run with noting but write in votes.
The Clinton victory in 1992 demonstrates the same ability of the Electoral College, which was designed to block the feared will of the People, to distort "the voice of the People." Clinton, with 43% of the popular vote, got 370 EV, or 68%.
Bush with 34.7% got 168 EV, and Perot, who got 19%, got zero! Again, we see that the EV is totally distorting the popular vote! This is a hideous, anti-democratic devise, by design, but its time to exploit it to elect progressives, and they we can get rid of it!
The Bush "victory in 2000, which came as Gore had half a million more votes, once again showed, in the ugliest way possible, how the candidate who does not get the majority of the votes can win...............based on electoral votes. I do not want to get into the Nader/chad/SC issue to stay focused, but suffice it to say, the guy with the most votes did NOT win.
There are dozens of cases of write ins in primaries and Congressional which determined the race. It's not crazy, it's not novel, and here is WHY we should start a bottom up movement for a write in campaign:
1. It will give burnt out Bernie bros something to do
2. It will be part of the political revolution:
The first part was to break the mold and run a robust campaign with small money.
3. The second part could be to bypass the machinery of the political establishment, which is designed to block 3d parties, and bypass the chads and electronic voting and all that and use the WRITE IN, as the corollary to the SMALL MONEY campaign: The corrupt Party machines cannot control write ins.
