Even Israel's primary backer, the US has the White House pressing Israel and Hamas to resume negotiations and exchange Palestinian prisoners for the hostages held by Hamas.
The Biden administration has told the Israelis they must avoid civilian casualties worrying they are going too far in its response to the Hamas raid on Israel on October 7th.
The bottom line is this. The US is the only country that has leverage over Israel. It could join with the other members on the UN Security Council, demand a cease fire, bring the belligerents to the table and work out a solution that has a sovereign Palestinian state including the West Bank and Gaza adjacent to Israel. The Council then authorize a UN peace keeping force to make sure the solution is implemented.
For sure the "solution" will be unpalatable to some on both sides. That has to be expected.
But this open sore has lasted 75 years. It needs to start healing.
The only problem is this. Will the US join with the others on the Security Council to bring a cease fire in Gaza and implement the two state solution?
