While this process of uncontrolled upheaval may be
inevitable, even necessary, the resulting political
changes need not necessarily lead to a fundamental change in the nature of our economic system, which is what is
REQUIRED to adapt to our energy constrained, no-net-growth future. Remember,
economics drives politics, not the other way around.
The most successful revolutionary changes are those that
grow organically from the ground up as opposed to being imposed from the top
down. These will be based principally on
a much increased degree of cooperation, as opposed to competition, among
and between, people. That said, competition--in ideas, as well as products and services--is essential
as it provides for a "reality check" as to which are "best" in the actual real
(as opposed to some ideological ideal) world. One essential element of our new
thinking must include the understanding that we humans, our emergent civilization, is
intrinsically embedded in nature--not separate from, and, somehow, outside of, it.
When the system goes down in our region, as due to environmental chaos in conjunction with declining net energy, it inevitably must, WE need to be prepared to step in and provide an alternative, decentralized, humane, organizing system. We must be prepared to educate those around us. It is at exactly this moment of systemic collapse, of maximal crisis, that we can replace a seeming intractable death-creating system with a Life-affirming one. Timing is critical. We cannot miss this moment and still succeed. It is up to each of us to work out the details individually and, as needed, collectively. This collaborative process should be done at the lowest scale of organization possible. The idea is to keep government as local as possible, as much as is possible.
Doing this will allow for the local, regional, and global
whole of our efforts to transcend the sum of their individual efforts. This
allows for us to tap into Nature's greatest power--the scientific miracle of emergence. I have written
extensively about emergence and its relevance to our planetary revolution on
many occasions in the past. (See HERE
and HERE for more information.) Our Revolution will be from the ground up, organized at
all levels across the planet, and will tap into Nature's deep property of
emergence. When the moment comes, let's hope that it will prove irresistible.
State repression can never snuff it out--state repression in revolutionary times only creates martyrs
and emboldens others towards victory.
The future is at stake. Let's get busy! It's time for
Revolutionary Evolution!
