So as I spend hours each day repairing the damage these years have brought about –removing dead wood that litters the ground, picking up trash, dealing with erosion, putting stones back into the walls I built ten years ago, and so forth—I find myself thinking also of what has happened to the American garden and of the kinds of labors we Americans must undertake to restore good order to our disturbed land.
Exploring the task before me here on my property, I think, may provide a useful perspective on the nature of the challenge ahead of us as a nation.
