While it is impractical to expect the total eradication of extremism from societies, the mitigation of the threat is possible through a multi-faceted approach. One, giving the larger community the tools to build counter-arguments against extremism and achieve social consensus against hate speech. Two, accelerating the dissemination of educated and balanced opinions on contentious and divisive subjects like imperialism, colonialism, slavery, and genocide to dilute extremist misinformation and propaganda. Three, recognizing the early warning signs and pro-actively engaging in the prevention and intervention of extremist actions. Finally, reverse the steady undermining of democratic norms and institutions and strengthen and protect inclusive, diverse democracies. A very tall order indeed, but the key for a peaceful and secure world.
