Occupy, The 'Battles Of Oakland', And The Face Of US Police Abuse

While 'to protect and serve' is the universal US police credo, too many incidents have long raised questions as to whom some officers see themselves as protecting and serving.   Police violence against peaceful demonstrators certainly does not seem in any community's interest, at least none in a democratic society.

In an apparent effort to push back the advance of Occupy's string of successes, the victories of 'we, the people', it seems darkly appropriate that the Oakland police department is the one attempting to strike such a blow.   While Scott Olsen fought in Iraq to supposedly bring freedom and democracy, it is indeed a paradox that it seems he was unable to even peacefully demonstrate at home.

But, as a proud US Civil Rights movement often sang, 'We Shall Overcome!'
