The writer then sadly notes how disappointed she was that the DEC officers of New York allowed this arrogant hunter to act like he owned the wild coyote and had the right to have him ripped apart by dogs! What about the media and onlookers?
Obviously, they had no compassion for the coyote either.
This poor coyote should have been offered sanctuary. The DEC officers should have called the animal control officer and had the coyote humanely euthanized, or if the law allowed for medical care, he should have been taken to a wildlife-rehabilitation center in or near Rochester where the coyote could have received help. How nice if this compassionate scenario had been realized and our frightened coyote had been taken there for help. But, sadly, no one at this plaza thought this coyote deserved mercy and a a second chance.
Linda, the writer of this Facebook post, said that she recently spoke with a representative of the DEC. He confirmed this story to be true, but noted it occurred a while ago. But she so rightly observes--that this make no difference to us as the state of New York has not changed their policy regarding the cruel, inhumane, and brutal way coyotes are handled and allowed to be abused and hounded to death by dogs.
And even more sad--the DEC does not feel
that any laws were broken, and therefore will continue as
always. We hope New Yorkers don't agree with this position and
will write letters and make phone calls if they want humane
changes. This campaign against the coyotes is far from
humane. They can't help being coyotes any more than we can help being
humans. God made us both and loves ALL His creatures.
I recently copied this quote from the Dali Lama, which I think applies here too:
"Human beings, indeed ALL SENTIENT BEINGS, have the right to pursue happiness and live in peace and freedom."
