Here's my take:
This assassination provocation by the US won't escalate into a major war principally because Iran doesn't want a war with the US.
Iran will retaliate but notice the assassination of Suleimani did not occur on Iranian soil. That is significant. Iran has made it clear it will respond directly to any attack within its air space.
The assassination occurred in Iraq so retaliation could very well happen against Americans in that country thus the State Department calling on American citizens to depart Iraq immediately.
Trump and his coterie knew not to conduct such an attack on Iranian soil which would have brought an immediate Iranian military response.
But make no mistake. This assassination of Suleimani by Trump is a major provocation escalating tensions with Iran which Khamenei knows cannot go unanswered.
Sadly it's not a good time to be an American on foreign soil. That's because of something our government perpetrated on Iran which US "officials" then dissembled misinforming the American people blaming it all on Iran .
