A billionaire, former Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is one of the founders and the prime mover of Everytown for Gun Safety, a partnership between Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America a group that includes the mothers of victims of gun violence. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence was founded in 1974 and follows an innovative data-driven states based strategy to defeat gun violence including GVRO. Gun Violence Restraining Order which recently passed in California, Oregon, and Washington, is based on data-driven behavioral risk factors for dangerousness rather than a diagnosis. Focusing on behavior helps identify individuals at risk of violence towards themselves or others without unfairly stigmatizing those living with mental illness, the vast majority of whom will never be violent. This organization has taken on the NRA by labeling its interpretation of the Second Amendment as "insurrectionism."
On March 30, 1981 Jim Brady was shot in the assassination attempt on President Reagan, suffered a serious head wound and would remain partially paralyzed for the rest of his life. But Sarah and Jim Brady used all their wit and power to push the Brady Bill requiring handgun background checks forward until it was signed by President Clinton on November 30, 1993. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has a mission with its Million Mom March to create a safer America by cutting the 33,000 annual gun deaths in half by 2025. In a video tape on their crusade Sarah Brady says:
"This can be done. But you have to be like my husband was. You have to persevere and you have to be patient. And ya have to keep the pressure on and keep working at it. But it can be done. And please don't give up hope. You all can finish the job."
I believe we all need to remember Sarah Brady's words in the aftermath of the Las Vegas tragedy roll up our sleeves and get to work.
