The trust deficit between India and China is growing as a matter of record. Not because of the Dalai Lama. It was despite the Dalai Lama.
Anyhow, the so called Dalai Lama card had some bearing on India- China bilateral relations in the fifties, may be even in the sixties. He had escaped from Tibet and took refuge in India way back in 1959. Yet the Dalai Lama was not the trigger for the 1962 war. If he was not then, he cannot be now, as well, unless, we stoop to accept the assertion that the Dalai Lama question is purely a China's domestic issue.
Whatever be the Chinese calculations and plans for his successor, the 81-year-old Dalai Lama today is a truly global citizen, a world leader. You cannot confine the Nobel Laureate for Peace as hostage to the ideas which have little relevance, when they were first floated, and which have since outlived their shelf-life.
Anyhow, anyone in Beijing steeped in the Godless Communism cannot hope to be the torch bearer of the search to find the Heir to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso.(Note: You can view every article as one long page if you sign up as an Advocate Member, or higher).
