The textbook's authors say, as a way of explaining their aversion for the psychodynamic approach, that the dark view of human nature emphasizes limitations and problems rather than possibilities and potentials. Yet these "scientists" don't offer any evidence for why this "dark" view is wrong. Truth is what offers the best possibilities and potentials. Human nature--like Nature itself--is what it is, both light and dark, positive and negative. We're magnificent creatures, though we won't fully appreciate that fact when afraid of our deeper dimensions.
When inner truth comes into focus, we're able to use our enhanced intelligence and awareness to overcome inner conflicts and emotional roadblocks. We don't need any brand of "straight thinking."
