Perhaps, a preventative barrier should have been built around every single oil rig operating within the United States and around the globe to stop the spread of this deadly oil should a similar blowout occur.
The only barrier that I can think of that would be strong enough are artificial islands such as the "Palm Islands' built in Dubai.
In reading this article: "Palm Deira will be composed of approximately 1 billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in the UAE. Between the three islands there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas." We can build these strong structures for the pleasure of mankind, but fail to build them to protect this planet? Simply amazing, wouldn't you say? Why didn't anyone ever think of that in the planning for offshore oil drilling? Where were the experts? Oh, yes, busy making money at the planet's expense.
