President Obama is many things. Unlike his predecessor he has a vast understanding of history and reads extensively. He, therefore, has a much greater understanding of everything from science and its limitations, to argument, to the Middle East, to Afghanistan.
Like his predecessor, however, he has been sucked into the military's delusional illusion that Afghanistan is "winnable."
"Winning" in Afghanistan has only relatively recently become "the mission." bin Laden "Dead or Alive" was. In Iraq our original mission was to find "WMDs" and "topple Saddam." This mission morphed so often that college thesis papers have been written on the various missions we defined to make our trespass into Iraq somehow seem palatable to a few.
We now seem to be in Iraq to create a democracy in our own image in a country about as far removed from a reflection of us as a goat might be from a reflection of a pineapple.
