Ecuador has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in its London embassy for more than five years. Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Ecuador's foreign minister, told reporters on Thursday that the South American country accepted Assange's application for naturalisation in December. The Australian-born activist took refuge at the Ecuadorean embassy in the UK capital in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, amid fears that he would have been handed over to the US to face prosecution over the publication of classified military and diplomatic documents by WikiLeaks.

Here's hoping the heroic, self-sacrificing Julian Assange gets some relief soon. Who has done more than him, at great cost to himself, to reveal the secret state machinations that confound world progress and peace? Viva Assange!

That he makes the Empire as jittery as he does tells us everything we need to know about his value to us as a journalist. Long live Julian Assange!

I despise the US, Sweden, and the UK for what they've done to Assange. Too bad he's not a mass-torturer and -murderer like Pinochet, right? Then maybe he would have been detained for only a year and half, in a comfortable rented house.

I thought once about becoming a journalist, back in the day when the University of Minnesota School of Journalism was influenced by Eric Severide.

But, I didn't want to take a chance on giving up the Freedom (fries) we all enjoy as American citizens.

Please take 4 minutes to watch this farewell speech.

Mr. Sevareid addresses journalistic integrity, a value most of us at the time believed would not be lost.

"Remember that ignorant and biased reporting has its counterpart in ignorant and biased reading and listening." --Eric Sevareid

Congratulations to Ecuador and its renowned Citizen!

Why is it that tiny Countries seem to have many more 'guts' - Or is it more 'Intestinal Fortitude' - than the big ones that Major in Saber rattling and starting Wars?
