The policy picture was probably more interesting, since in principle it will serve as the general core of the platform of Republican candidates in November. What appeared in Memphis to be the party's intended central theme was truly astonishing. The Republicans plan to run against wasteful Washington spending. They appear to have the brass nerve to do that in spite of the fact that the White House and both houses of Congress have been under Republican control since 2001. During that time, due to Republican tax cuts and continuing spending, the federal government has run billions of dollars in budget deficits and the national debt has grown from $5.7 trillion to $8.2 trillion. The solution to wasteful Washington spending that the party plans to present to the electorate in November would cut or slow expenditures on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security; grant a line-item veto to President Bush; and amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget. At the same time, they'll seek more tax cuts for the rich. [Oh the horror...oh the terror!!]
