To Greed or not to Greed; that is the question. Whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of misfortune, or ignore the rules and kick butt. That is the difference behind the basic tenets of the two, arguably diametrically opposed, financial institutions of our age; capitalism and communism. One counts on Greed as a driving force in the game; the other relies on the whole Nation retaining an objective view of each act they perform, however unfruitful it may be in the short run or locally; as long as it serves all. Communism relies much more, in fact, on the moral stability of its people and their vision of their nation's needs as paramount. So, how's that working for them?
Truth is, greed has its function, as does competition in scholastic settings, much as teachers would like to dispense with it. Who goes bankrupt betting on human morality? According to Greenspan, who recently revealed his misguided predictions posited an apparently unfounded faith in human morality, we all didjustthat.
Who will not steal when the event will go unseen? President Obama comments regarding bonuses in companies bankrupt but for bailouts ??"the people on Wall Street still don't get it. ? nor do we get them, and that is the crux of the matter.
Do we understand the kind of wolves we have put to hunt in the jungle that is the Market? Like dowsers they seem, with magical powers, so distant from most of us is the world of high finance and the mathematical talents necessary to wield power there, that those adepts might as well be Merlins of Money; since all magic is naught but a manifestation of one's perception or lack thereof during a particular event. Most of us are just oohing and aahing in the audience.
Do we understand the Market? I would bet the farm that fewer than one in ten congressmen truly understand what happened there, despite the fact that nine in ten lost money as a result.
We do not even seek to punish the wolves among us; bleeding us all dry? Why is that? Because somewhere within us we know they are acting in good faith according to the Law of their Jungle; and somewhere within us there is admiration for their recent coup; while our gas goes up and our credit card rates triple and unemployment rises. To Greed, or not to Greed? We're still not sure, are we?
