Bing Crosby: Why is MacGrrrrrreeeeeeggggor on the roof? Hope: Because he heard drrrrrrrrrrinks are on the house. It is ?hoose? actually, if you really want to be exacting but the ?Road? movies were for a US audience that may not have got it.

So here we have a Scots guy who is mean and does not understand English expressions, as well as being a drunk! I have often felt that Scotland is a fairly cold, wet place and as most spare cash goes on heating, there is little left over for frivolity.

We invented whisky because we had to, again because of the weather. So we are mean and drunk. OK, but thick? I take exception to that, as only a tiny majority of us are thick.

Here I am attempting to disarm an insult. Another method of defence is to get drunk and fall over, as it is expected, indeed you will disappoint, if you are too staid. To play the Scotsman completely, however, you must also threaten.

Scots love Sean Connery as he was the first screen Scot who was both cool and threatening and one you would laugh with, not at. Before that it was grim.

Scots always had tartan to identify themselves in films, but the yellows and bright orange colours were pure Hollywood. In ?Brigadoon? you need shades to watch the dancing scenes. Tartan in real life, was made from vegetable dyes and there were no bright colours. Even a half-blind deer would have lived to old age, with hunters trumpeting their presence so luridly.
