It's always a tough decision for me whether to watch when Bush makes a speech. Do I have the stomach for it, or is it worth it for the unintentional comedy he always provides? Last night I compromised. I passed on it live but watched it later on C-Span.
What a pathetic moment in our history. The same old-same old rhetoric that even he can't muster any passion for. A series of lies flying blatantly in the face of all the facts of the past seven years. But the fact-checkers don't even bother anymore. We need truth-checkers -- they would be challenged.
But it did set my mind at rest to some extent about any martial law scenario. He soooo wants it to be over. He never really wanted it in the first place -- just an ego trip to see if he could do it and finally show his father. One term and one day would have been enough. I don't know why he doesn't just do everyone a favor and resign tomorrow. Oh yeah . . . Cheney.
And there was Darth himself behind him, looking literally like a stuffed bird, motionless except for the pre-scripted moments when he was to rise and lead the ovation, which he did like one of the robots in the Hall of Presidents at Disney World. But even the Republicans could manage only the most tepid applause. They were too busy watching their jobs disappear -- a recession, indeed.
I also noticed five of the nine Supreme Court justices had better things to do, including Scalia and Thomas -- two of the three remaining who foisted this fraud on us in the first place. A true accountability moment.
I suspect my overall reaction was shared by most who bothered to watch: Finally, at long last, the last one.
