Coulter – Where are her defenders now? Why does anyone continue to carry her column?

by Steven Leser     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

Attempts by journalists and pundits to grab headlines by being outrageous (and thus grab cash via syndication or appearance fees) normally fall flat on their face. Most of us quickly recognize such people for what they are and tune them out. A friend’s sister used to run a website dedicated to exposing such people aptly called ‘MediaWhoresOnline.com’. It is thus an interesting phenomena that Coulter appears to survive and thrive by using the ugliest of rhetoric in a transparent effort to sell herself and drive up her appearance prices.

The last time my attention turned to Ms. Ann Coulter, a fawning fan-journalist of hers by the name of Marc Sheppard rushed to her defense saying that my characterizations of her were ‘vile’ and tended to ‘acquit’ her.

I haven’t heard much from Mr. Sheppard lately.

The latest spew from Coulter’s pie hole, the offhanded characterization of former Senator and current Presidential candidate John Edwards as a ‘faggot’ has finally started to earn Coulter the type of attention she deserves, condemnation from all corners and the dropping of her column from several newspapers. In my opinion, any periodical that continues to carry her column isn’t worth the paper on which it is printed.

Of course, this latest installment of super-sensationalized hate and bigotry is only the latest in a long line from Coulter. Her tirades against Arabs and people of the Muslim faith have gone on for so long and are so well known that even most Arab and Muslim Anti-Discrimination groups stopped bothering to document them over two years ago.

Coulter only takes a break from attacking Muslims when she is attacking gays and the gay community or Liberals and Democrats. Gays are invariably referred to as sodomites and Democrats and Liberals are always referred to as traitors. Those are the standard lines on which Coulter has built her whole career. If you didn’t know who Coulter was and you read this article to this point, you would now know everything there is to know about her.

That Coulter can be so easily and quickly summed up is a testament to how little journalistic value she has which leads to the obvious questions:

What possible reason could any newspaper or periodical have had to carry her column the last few years?

What possible reason could any newspaper or periodical have to continue carrying her column?

What is wrong with the people who enjoy reading her columns such that they have to have the ugliest and least publication-worthy hate rhetoric spoon-fed to them at regular intervals?

What is wrong with Republican and Conservative groups such that they have embraced or at least refused to take Coulter to task for all of her ugly hate-speak?

If one was hoping that the most Conservative of Americans were finally turning their backs on Coulter, they would be disappointed. Even though the mainstream Republican party has started to distance themselves from her, groups like the ultra-conservative Freepers at Freerepublic.com have expressed their support despite her latest comments. A post on Free Republic of the article “Shame on Conservatives (for not supporting Coulter)” http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1798178/posts  reprinted from RightBias News’ Nancy Morgan, garnered nearly 70 responses praising Coulter. Some of the responses even referred to Coulter as a ‘hero’.

If there is a silver lining in Coulter’s latest rant, it is that it has helped expose some of the garbage newspapers out there for the rags that they are. People should refuse to buy, read, or purchase advertising in any print or online periodical that carries Coulter’s column.

She lost a bunch of newspapers and web advertisers

Just spotted this on Wiki (which has a fairly sympathetic, no generous, entry on Coulter):

On March 5, 2007, Coulter appeared on FOX News Hannity and Colmes and explained that her use of the word "faggot" was a "taunt" and further expounded that [the word] "faggot isn't offensive to gays; it has nothing to do with gays." In regards to the criticisms from her own party, Coulter responded with "Apparently our top three Republican nominees aren't that smart. And by the way, if they're going to start apologizing for everything I say, they better keep that statement handy cause there's going to be a lot more in the next year."[105]

Verizon, Sallie Mae, and Netbank pulled their advertisements from Coulter's website due to complaints received. Verizon stated: "Per our policy, the networked Web site ad purchases are supposed to be stripped of certain kinds of Web sites. This one could be considered an extreme political Web site, should be off the list, and now it is off the list."[106] Several newspapers also dropped Coulter's column over her use of the epithet, including The Times of Shreveport in Louisiana, The Oakland Press in Michigan, The Mountain Press of Sevierville, Tennessee, and the New Era in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[107] [108]

Ann must think she's some kind of prize

Just another out of control right winger supporting Bush. This my friends was a good job of putting one of them back in there place. We need to push on and do the same for Bush and his Administration, even if we need to fight on way after his presidential term ends. There nonsense should have been stopped day one by the Senate and Congress. Its up most important in a total fight against corrupt government officials of this nation. We most take this country back at all cost or risk losing more freedoms or all of them. If we play wait and see if government gets better just because Bush disappears from powers the next time may be far to late to fend off this explosive corruption like that G.W.Bush has been using.

My name it means nothing, my age it means less. My deeds of activism are mine to enjoy and share as I feel necesary, not as some clown in a small forum's administration thinks I must..This place gets worse each and every visit.

Much ado about nothing....

Ive got Shakespeare on the brain this morning.....

So Mann Coulter called Edwards a bundle of sticks and twigs, whats the fuss about? Personally I believe that calling for the banning of anyones right to post or publish is a far worse action.

Look, would you rather have , as defender of the oppositions points of view, a reasonable, intelligent and well framed voicing of the points or this absurd harridan? I know my opinion.

Coulter

It is beyond my belief that any company, newspaper, magazine, TV station, Radio station - would give this woman any credability in any way, shape or form.  She is disgusting and shameful and should be thrown on the garbage dump!!!How did she ever make it to where she is???  What is her background - did she work for the Nazi's????She is probably highly respected by Bush and gang!!

Anthrax Ann, on yet another lunatic rant

How ironic that the ambiguously gendered Ann Coulter is smearing John Edwards with an anti-gay slur. Edwards is a dedicated husband and father and a public servant that put his good fortune and hard work into the service of others.
Coulter, single, middle aged,a bitter, mean spirited harpy from hell, serves only herself and the sales of her bile filled books she hawks to the hate mongers of the
radical right.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential contender John Edwards hopes to make some quick campaign cash off a conservative columnist's slur at a convention of Republican activists.
"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I — so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards," Ann Coulter told Republicans attending the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.

Democrats were quick to condemn her remark.

Howard Dean, the Democratic National Committee chairman, called on Republican presidential contenders to denounce the "hate-filled" comment.

Edwards' campaign sent an e-mail to supporters calling the comment a "shameless display of bigotry."
