A coalition of pollsters including Gallup, Quinnipiac and ABC News traveled to Crestview, Florida last Monday to poll the Bush supporter. What they discovered is sure to be troubling to the White House. "I'm not sure I can support him anymore," said Ray W. Sher, manager of the local bippydash convenience store, "I used to support him because I believed in him, then a bunch of us here in Crestview continued to pull for him because we felt sorry for him, having done so badly on just about everything. But, now, being the only one left has started to become lonely. It also has become embarrassing for my kids. They're teased even worse than the kids whose parents insist that they have seen UFOs."
Sher, 55, is a lifelong Republican and voted for Dole, Bush senior twice, Reagan, etc. His loss would be seen as embarrassing to the White House, who have been rounding up support for the President to 1% in blatant defiance of polling organizations and mathematicians nationwide. The defection of Sher would put the Presidents support at 0%, a mark that would be impossible to get beneath, damning Bush to at least a tie for worst favorability rating for a US President for all eternity. The White House was in full damage control mode. The President had called Sher twice to make a personal appeal and the first lady's secretary was attempting to set up a lunch meeting with Sher. There were even rumors that Jenna and Barbara had been contacted and pleaded with to offer their virtue to Mr. Sher, so desperate is the White House to avoid the Goose Egg. White House press officials vehemently denied such a suggestion as ludicrous. Still, the panic in the executive branch was palpable. All cabinet officials have been pulled off their normal assignments and pressed into service to come up with a plan to keep Sher's support firmly in the White House camp.
"Aw, hell" said Sher when pressed for an additional comment "I've gone this far with him, I might as well go on a little longer. How much worse could it get? He'll probably do better on some policies and decisions soon just because of the law of averages".
