"Americans Can't Handle Another Impeachment" Is Republican Propaganda. Don't Be Deceived.

by Linda Milazzo     Page 1 of 2 page(s)

Tell A Friend

"Americans can't handle another impeachment." So say the supporters of George W. Bush in their anti-impeachment propaganda.

The truth is Americans CAN handle another impeachment. They CAN handle the truth. In fact, if Americans don't bring Bush and Cheney to justice after the atrocities they've committed, this nation will never reclaim its moral authority. And the people of this nation will be despised for unleashing these dangerous men on the world.

"Americans can't handle another impeachment" isn't a truth. It's a device. Like 'weapons of mass destruction.' 'A mushroom cloud.' 'Gassed his own people.' 'Sought significant quantities of uranium from A-f-r-i-c-a.' These are the sound bytes, the parroted propaganda, which brought us to war. Each is a proven lie, told time and again by well-rehearsed pundits. Verbatim delivery. Robotic form. Repeated ad nauseam by grown-up children of the damned. It sounded good for Nicholson in "A Few Good Men," but rings pretty hollow here. Americans CAN handle and probe for the truth.

As soon as the midterm elections were settled and Democrats took back control, the Republican parrots flew onto the scene. The first to land was smooth talking Connecticut Congressman Christopher Shays, who perched on cspan the morning of November 9th. Within minutes Shays proclaimed the pitfalls of impeachment, responding to an oped by former Republican House Majority Leader, Dick Armey. In his article, Armey advised Republicans to "demonstrate an ability to be good stewards of the taxpayers' hard-earned money. If Republicans do these things, they will also restore the public's faith in our standards of personal conduct."

Shays' indoctrinated response: "He's totally right, but we didn't lose that [the public's faith] in the last week or two or month. We lost it when we decided to go after the President [Clinton] and impeach him. The moment we did that Republicans thought this is how we gain the absolute majority. The irony is after trying to impeach the President in the sixth year of President Clinton's term in office we should have picked up seats. We lost seats. You would have thought right then and there that we would have woken up. We never got back to our agenda after impeachment."

Observe Shays' specific reference to the sixth year of the President's term. The message from Shays to Democrats: Impeaching George Bush will cost you in 2008.

The message from Democrats to Shays: We won't succumb to your sound bytes. We won't listen to your lies.

An analysis by John Nichols, written that same day in The Capital Times, proves historically that impeachment is not a political liability. Nichols says, "There have been nine attempts since the founding of the republic to move articles of impeachment against a sitting president. In the cases in which impeachment was proposed by members of an opposition party, that party either maintained or improved its position in Congress at the next general election. In seven instances the party that proposed impeachment secured the presidency in the next election."

Thus quashing Shays' Republican propaganda.

If America and Americans are to be resurrected in the eyes of the world, proper investigation of the Bush administration is a Democratic mandate. If, as I believe, incontrovertible evidence of Bush and Cheney's high crimes and misdemeanors is uncovered, impeachment proceedings should go forth. Already, prior to any Congressional investigations taking place, volumes have been written delineating the impeachable crimes of Bush and Cheney. High level symposiums have been held. Dozens of Constitutional scholars have spoken, all convinced of their guilt.

Conversely, prior to Bill Clinton's impeachment, just one principal volume detailing his "crime" was prepared. A scandalous and shameful project, salaciously compiled by Special Prosecutor Ken Starr in a political witch hunt that was obvious to the world. The impeachment of Bill Clinton was an international embarrassment. To most of the world, Clinton was a beloved and respected leader, guilty of a personal indiscretion. Not of high crimes and misdemeanors. Not of lying the nation into war. Not of bypassing and ignoring the Constitution. Not of reversing a Constitutionally prescribed centuries old law.

What shocked the world most about Bill Clinton's impeachment was that he was ever impeached at all. It made a farce of our political system, and our values. Americans appeared petty and juvenile. Unable to distinguish between what was crucial to good governance and what was not. Impeaching Bill Clinton was a black mark on our history. Not against him. Against us.

But impeaching George W. Bush will be constructive for America and Americans. It will be educational. Americans will watch the proceedings and learn about the Constitution. They'll receive a long overdo lesson on the Constitutional responsibilities of their President, the balance of powers, and gain a clearer understanding of their own rights and freedoms. Americans will acquire an insight into proper governance to make them better stewards of their democracy.

America, the nation, will regain some of the moral authority diminished by Bush and Cheney. The rest of the world will know that America can distinguish between insignificant and substantial. Clinton was impeached for matters insignificant to his leadership of the nation. Bush will be impeached for matters so substantial that they caused the deaths of thousands and endangered the whole world.

Americans needn't worry that Impeachment proceedings and investigative hearings will detract from Congress' time to attend to its legislative responsibilities. I have the utmost confidence in the organizational skills of Speaker Pelosi. I'm certain she will institute a process which permits Congress to fulfill its legislative duties while addressing the Executive's dereliction of duty. Unlike prior Speaker Hastert, Speaker Pelosi has made clear her edict to put an end to the House as a part-time Institution and return it to a full-time, fully functioning place of governance. We will hold her to that promise.

Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid were voted a mandate to probe for the truth. Though Pelosi contends "Impeachment is off the table," we patriots contend that it is not. When Pelosi says "Democrats don't get even," we say, Madame Speaker, we're not impeaching to get even. We're impeaching to make even... the Branches of government that have gotten out of line.

Hear, hear!

Ms. Milazzo, I couldn't agree more. If the deeds - or, more accurately, misdeeds - of the Bush Administration do not qualify as "high crimes and misdemeanors" then it's hard to imagine what possibly would. Critics of impeachment be damned. The issue at stake has nothing to do with "revenge." It has nothing to do with "partisanship." It has nothing to do with "payback for Bill Clinton" - though the argument could be made that the impeachment bar was set pretty low by the GOP during his presidency. The issue to me is about acountability, pure and simple. It is about sending a message to the nation and the world that Executive excesses will not be tolerated by our democracy. It is about reinforcing the concept that elected officials are actually servants of the people, and that no one, no matter how exalted his title, is above the law. If we as a citizenry do not insist on a vigorous investigation (at the very least) into the malfeasance of the Bush White House, then we are guilty of tacitly supporting, endorsing, and excusing the belligerent and imperialistic policies Dubya and friends have perpetrated during their tenure. If we do not enthusiastically condemn this administration's orchestrated lies, assaults on the Constitution, unprovoked invasion and slaughter of foreign civilians, and egregious mismanagement of the U.S. as a whole, then we ally ouselves with those actions and attitudes by our very silence. And that's a lousy message to telegraph to the globe. The reign of George the Younger has been a cancer eating away at our national soul. And if we are to survive it with any semblance of that soul intact, we must immediately begin an aggressive treatment program to remove the malignancy from our body politic

Reply: misdeed

The dutch word for crime is 'misdaad,' literally translated as misdeed. I like that. But don't think that the list of misdeeds were solely perpetrated by G.W. Bush. Clinton also has part in the crimes. He allowed the sanctions to Iraq to go on which caused an estimated number of death in Iraq to about a million, mainly children. Also daddy Bush is a war criminal. He provoked Saddam's attack of Kuwait by pretending he didn't care at all, and then pulled the strings to get the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to lie about the dropped babies in the hospital after which he was free to kick Saddam out of Kuwait again. He also let the people in the south of Iraq die at the hands of Saddam when he promised them to help them if they would rise up against Saddam, but he didn't so about 100.000 people in the south got killed. He also made a lot of money by sending Rumsfeld to Iraq and selling a lot of WMD. Yes Saddam _had_ WMD, they were sold to him by the US. The hypocrisy!

Impeachment is too good for this criminal cabal. Indictments for crimes against humanity are warranted, including their biggest crime - 9-11!

USA WILL THRIVE AFTER REMOVAL OF W

Oh ye of little faith...: You're sadly mistaken. A nation which has survived 6 yrs of Bush/Cheney, 2 world wars, a civil war, countless other wars, waged a few unjust wars, some depressions, can & will survive impeachments of G W Bush & R B Cheney & will thrive after they're removed from office. There is a question about the USA's existing after 2 more yrs of W & co remaining in office. I'm among the # who would like it better if W, Sure Shot, et al faced treason trials for a conviction of treason may lead to a sentence of death. If whatever passes for the GOP establishment induced W & Sure Shot to resign al la Nixon/Agnew removal of the 1970's it would save us time & money & allow for treason trials. Whomever replaced Sure Shot as VP could take office as POTUS after W's resignation. It's to be hoped that the GOP's establishment would induce W, Sure Shot & whomever becomes POTUS that no pardons or grants of immunity from prosecution would be tolerated re: the many criminal acts of W & co. Treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity & the many other crimes of W & co are most grave offenses. Sentences of life in solitary at a super-max prisons at hard labor &/or other very severe conditions of confinement might be considered if the accused agreed to be as forthcoming as Jack Abramof(ov) & fully co-operated in any & all further inquiries of the Congress or other federal entities.

""Americans Can't Handle Another Impeachment" Is

Ms. Linda, That didn't seem to worry John McCain, Orrin Hatch, John Warner, Robert Bennet, Christopher Bond, Elizabeth Dole, Pete Domenici, Lindsey Graham, Chuck Grassley, Chuck Hagel, John Kyle, Richard Lugar, Mitch McConnell, Jeff Sessions, Richard Shelby, Arlen Specter, Ted Stevens and a a whole bunch in the House when they impeached Clinton for lying about adultery. These are the "so-called" moderate conservatives who practice "Conservatism with compassion," not counting some of the loud mouth redneck bunch like Rick Santorum and Trent Lott. Impeachment? We do not want to hear it right now, either for impeachment or against it. What we want to hear is Senate and House investigation after investigation for the next two years on such "innocent things" as Cheney-Halliburton and no bid contracts with thirty billion bucks and one hundred million bucks missing in Iraq and New Orleans, the secret energy meetings at the beginning of the first term of the Bush administration, the no warrant searches of email and phone calls of American citizens, the torture of any one in the world by the CIA and other American agencies under full governmental approval, the '00 elections in Florida, the '04 elections in Ohio, the vetting of a CIA secret agent, the handling and mishandling of intelligence leading to the Iraq invasion, Bush's missing furlough papers, and on and on and on we want to go until the American people are screaming for his head and most of the Republican party with all their subversive election methods are thrown into such dishonor the Republicans will be lucky if they can win another majority for the next twenty-five years. Yes, we do don't want to talk impeachment,... right now. We want to lay the foundation out before the American public until all can see that this is a necessary step to protect the very freedom of this whole nation. For two whole years we want to keep George W. Bush as an Albatross around the whole conservative movement's neck, until he finally rots off with a stink heard and believed around the world. It is payback time, baby. The American democratic system of government will not stand until we clean the sewer out of these rats that infest the White House and the Congressional halls.

Thank God for George Lakoff!! America speaks the truth to power and to America and the world through voices like Linda Milazzo's. She and many others are refuting the inaccurate comparisons, the sound bites, the catch phrases, the distortions ... using common sense, logic and fact. I know Linda Milazzo is an original, but I also see the influence of George Lakoff's "framing" lessons echoing throughout our society and our political and social life. Thank you, Linda, for this marvelous slice of REALITY. ps: I am, personally, eternally grateful to George Lakoff. I hope someone nominates him for a Pulitzer Prize! In Solidarity: IMPEACH Bush and Cheney

If we the people had to endure Clinton's ORAL Office, we the people of the world would greatly benefit from holding this Administration accountable and demanding some truth! I have been beating the impeachment drum on WAWA for months. I imagine impeachment would enable we the people to reclaim COMMON SENSE and the opportunity that day we call 9/11 brought to us: the opportunity to lead the world in the global fight against violence as sisters and brothers. "Soon after I had published the pamphlet "Common Sense" [on Feb. 14, 1776] in America, I saw the exceeding probability that a revolution in the system of government would be followed by a revolution in the system of religion... All this effort spent on these arguments is a waste of time.

Linda, I love ya, I really do, but believe me when I tell you that we are wasting our time arguing about this. Please spread the word once you have gone over what I am going to say here. Read my articles and Robs articles on the subject. Think for a second about what we already know are three definite facts. 1. The President's approval rating is already so low that people probably want to get rid of him without knowing any misdeeds. 2. We already know that investigations will take place on several critical items. 3. We know that those items being investigated will yield discovery of substantial criminal activities having been committed by the administration. We can take the high road and claim we are not after impeachment and let the people decide when the facts are unearthed and displayed for all to see. Believe me, considering how much people dislike idiot-boy and his henchmen in the White House right now, it will not take much, but much we shall have and the people will scream for impeachment and we shall have no other choice but to give it to them. That is how we should approach this. Do not succumb to this red-herring argument that seems taylor-made to split the party. Whether or not people are angling for impeachment, impeachment or resignation is inevitable.

One last thought...

... what are the first steps of impeachment, anyway? The first steps are hearings and investigations. We are getting that now without using the 'i' word. So much the better. We avoid that whole argument up front about whether or not it is the right thing all the while gathering evidence and making it public. We already have around 33% of the country in favor of impeachment hearings. What do YOU all think the odds are we get easily double that number once the evidence comes out of the investigations? I'd like to go into the official impeachment investigations with that higher number behind me. Puts a lot more pressure on the Senate Republican Caucus to give us those 17 additional votes should it go that far. Of course, it wont. If we see over 50% of the country demanding impeachment, we will see President Pelosi as a result of resignations.

Shays is just covering his butt

I saw him use the convoluted logic on CSPAN. How dare he compare the 2 Impeachments! I also read an oped by Dick Armey in the Washington Post. H spent most of his time stating that the Republicans lost their way because they had behaved liked Democrats! These people have such an extraordinary talent for twisting facts, that it has become humorous ever time one of them opens heir mouths. I agree that the country could survive Impeachment of Bush and Cheney. My problem is that I don't think the Democrats can survive it. It will look politically motivated since Pelosi would benefit [she is next in line to the Presidency]. This could back fire in 2008. Then we might get someone who is much better at lying to the American people about what we are doing in Iraq etc. Not that it isn't a satisfying thought for Bush and Cheney to finally be held accountable for what they have done.

The Way I See it,

Hearings = Impeachment Once Henry Waxman, John Conyers and others start investigating and holding hearings, they don't need to call them impeachment hearings. They will turn up the evidence and roll over the whistleblower witneses. Bush and Cheney will never reach impeachment. They will resign. I do worry that the Dems won't have the toughness to insist upon guilty pleas and jail time.

I want them to get on the floor of the House in a special combined televised session and step by step admit to each and every one of their crimes and for them to say exactly why each was wrong. Then idiot boy can go back to Crawford and Darth Cheney can return to Wyoming. What else could either do after that? They would live the rest of their lives in terrible infamy. They cannot travel overseas, they would face war crimes charges.

Now that the Democrats won, it is time to Impeach for such actions as the gov't rountinely violating our Constitutional rights. They violate the 1st Amendment by caging demonstrators and banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon. America Deceived (book) They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns during Katrina. They violate the 4th Amendment by conducting warrant-less wiretaps. They violate the 5th and 6th Amendment by suspending habeas corpus. They violate the 8th Amendment by torturing. They violate the entire Constitution by starting 2 illegal wars based on lies and on behalf of a foriegn gov't. Impeach for that and while you are at it, investigate 9/11 a bit more thoroughly.

Let It Bleed

Why do hate and revenge get such a bad rap? Who decided that these two very natural reactions are always inappropriate? It is extremely energizing and purifying to hate evil and to want to see it punished. It's the same instinct that every good guy - bad guy story plays upon, and it hasn't misled us there either. Let me proudly announce that I DETEST the people that gang raped Lady Liberty and that my sense of justice DEMANDS that they be severely punished and humiliated. Their memories should be Hitlerized. In the future, it should be offensive to compare Bush and Hitler - to Hitler. If America turns the other cheek, then I will consider that a personal betrayal. The thought of Bush and Cheney should cause people to feel revulsion. Their families should be forced to change their names from shame - like the Hitler line has (you don't run into too many Hitlers these days). Sure, investigations and impeachments are justified by loftier reasons as well: restoring the rule of law and defending the Constitution demand it. And those are good reasons. But I want blood, as I have already explicated HERE, and I am not ashamed to say it or to want it. Make them suffer.

A threat is more important than the actual deed sometimes

that is what my chess coaach said to us many times when we trsined to be professionals. Folks, impeachement is a beatiful thing but we seem to forget that Dems and GOP are from the same root. Threat of impeachment can be more important politically to avoid drastic possibilitities. It is obvious that whoever directs the political machine, gives money and all does not want skirmishes. I was saying before and am saying again that nice and fluffy CRIMINAL probe on Katrina should be the attainable goal. Then several CRIMINAL probes on Homeland security and CIA. Then a nice reopening on Cheney doings. The circle must narrow slowly, the same way the GOP did it. But it has to be a permanent attack and and a permanent threat all the time. I am sure there is a lot of dirt on our friends, the neocons. Hang them high! But there is a litmuss test: if Bush's law on eavesdropping passes, we can forget that all. It would mean that Dems are in cahoots with GOP and we might as well go watch 'Bobby' for a change.

Or our national soul will continue to wither and die. And I don't care if they're impeached or they resign over fear of impeachment - but THEY MUST BE KICKED TO THE CURB! And with prejudice. If we let their myriad of high crimes and other misdeeds go unpunished - then what lesson will that teach to fellow Americans? What message will that send to my children and to the children of America? I say that these outright, open, and documented crimes: crimes against America, Against the Constitution, Against humanity and the world - they can not be allowed to stand. Whatever the cost.

I think Clintons impeachment was a setup to make people discount impeachment, when it is really necessary. The War in Iraq was planned, 911 was the opening act. No there will be no impeachment, resignation I will be surprised. Most in the Senate will probably receive more anthrax mail, to make sure W means Win. Or war begins in Iran. There are 3 civil wars in the Middle East now. Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq. Impeachment? I have more hope for drinking a strawberry daquari on the moon, than thinking impeachment will happen. It would be nice to bring some real justice to America, so if it's impeachment you want...then...let's go.
