This is a long email - but very important. We have tried to make it easy for you to contact the members of two groups that will be meeting this week and next. The members of these groups need to hear from thousands of voters across Tennessee so our call for secure elections in Tennessee cannot be ignored. Both of these groups will have a strong influence on whether legislation is passed early in 2008 mandating voter-verifiable paper ballots and random mandatory recounts - in time for the November 2008 presidential election.
Tennessee is one of the last states that allows electronic voting on machines with NO paper ballot. Without paper ballots that have been marked by the voter (to be counted in a mandatory audit) there is no way to know that the electronic voting machine recorded your vote accurately.
Please forward this email to everyone you know in Tennessee.
*First, TACIR, the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, is meeting this Wednesday, December 12, in Room 29 of Legislative Plaza. *
*Secondly, a group of legislators, the **Study Committee on Voter Confidence, is meeting on December 18, also in Room 29, Legislative Plaza*. Based on the report and recommendation they receive from TACIR, this Study Committee will voice their own recommendation about the Voter Confidence Act, legislation we support that would require voter-verifiable paper ballots and random audits.
*Here is what you can do--it's easy, simple and effective.*
*Tell the members of both groups that we need voter-verifiable paper ballots and mandatory random audits for the November 2008 election. *
Here's a sample message:* *
/I urge you to recommend legislation that will mandate that all voting equipment used in TN provides a voter-verifiable paper ballot and post election audits. Only if these two measures are enacted can the integrity of our franchise be secured. The time for a decision is now if we are to protect our votes before November, 2008. I urge you to do the following:/
/1) Accept the TACIR staff report, "Trust But Verify" that outlines the compelling problems with paperless voting, and offers strong recommendations that would correct these problems./
