For OpEdNews: Philip Wood - Writer

I recently received an e-mail from a friend stating how the "expletive"- Democrats were trying to steal the election via "expletive"- ACORN registering a "expletive"- bunch of criminals and non-existent, non-entities and how the  "expletive, expletive, expletive"- need to be taken out and shot. How dare they try to steal a Presidential Election! In the history of the United States NO ONE has ever had the "expletive, expletive, expletive"- gall to attempt to do such a thing!

Up until Mr. McCain's campaign folks began their attack on ACORN I sincerely doubt if my friend had been aware that ACORN existed. The paragraph in his mental dictionary containing "acorn"- portrayed an image of what one might find in the approximate area of the drip ring of an Oak tree. I suppose that at least the GOP has succeeded in this latest attack in somewhat broadening the vocabulary of its base beyond a "expletive, expletive"- nut case.

The literacy rate in America is 97% which in comparison to the rest of the world isn't terribly impressive. It could and should be far better but in reality is far worse than would first appear. The fact that someone is "literate" in and of itself doesn't really do much to raise the median intelligence quotient of the U.S. Population.

For instance, I have a Valid Drivers License but unless a dire emergency arises and I can find no one to act as chauffer (a situation arising once or twice a year) I have no need of it.  Though I have no proof I suspect that much of the GOP base whom are "literate"- make similar use of their "ability"- to read. They really have no need of this for their leaders will provide them with any and all information necessary for their existence. Case in Point the situation with Acorn, or for that matter the Islamic Terrorist Barack Hussein Obama.

After 60 years I still retain enough naiveté to believe world peace is possible but being a realist have to face the fact that I won't be around to see it. In my youth some well meaning folks tried to teach me to respect my elders but my (more...)
