Bush has realized more power since 9-11 than he could have ever dreamed of attaining in the peaceful era that preceded his ascendance to office. He has effectively deployed the full force of our nation's military in a seemingly intractable conflict in Iraq, the rest stationed in Afghanistan and around the globe as mercenaries of the new American imperialism. His eye is on Iran. He has his own military intelligence apparatus as close as a Cabinet office away. The new intelligence branch headed by an old crony and Rumsfeld pal, Stephen Cambone, has had its influence elevated by a change in the order of succession which demoted the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy to place the new Pentagon spy unit within arm's reach of Karl Rove and the White House operators.
