Instead of growing a spine the Democrats opted to follow the plan---the modus operandi---that they too often choose to follow. It is a four-step plan.
1. Stand up firmly against the Bush administration in rhetoric
2. Respond to the criticism of what was said by toning down the position you were planning on taking
3. Make it obvious you never intended to act on your rhetoric but just wanted to say whatever the hell you could think of because you wanted media attention or to know what your constituents were really thinking
4. Disregard American constituents and when it comes time to vote on bills, make sure you don’t do anything that might be thought to be courageous.
Although we did not start a war with Iran, it was a good year for madness. It was a good year for fascism. It was a good year for disaster capitalism. It was a good year for global warming. It was a good year for torture. It was a good year for war. It was a good year for poverty. It was a good year for ignorance and naivety.
It was a good year for madness because we, the American voters, still fail to own up and take responsibility fully for what we have allowed to happen.
Unfortunately, if 2007 is any indication, it will be a good year for madness in 2008 too (especially since the Democratic presidential candidates seem to be embracing madness as much as Republicans do more and more each day).
