Whatever Happened to M.A.D. ?        by Phil Klein

With an attack upon Iran seeming to become ever more imminent, it occurs to me that seldom these days do we see the term, "mutually assured destruction" (M.A.D.) employed.   This was a scary term to describe a thermonuclear conflict that might have involved the two superpowers (U.S.A & U.S.S.R.) in an incredibly destructive conflict in the early years of the Cold War, particularly in the two decades following the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early "60's.

It was an era when only those two nations had faced off with new and hideous nuclear weapons. Either was capable of starting a war which would destroy the other and/or the world! Back then, we were all scared stiff, and there was constant talk on both sides of attempting to create what was called a "nuclear freeze" - a time when nations would stop building these weapons of horror and maintain a sort of status quo of balanced terror.

Alas, these are now but bizarrely fond memories!   A large number of nations are in possession of nuclear arms and an outgrowth of these devilish developments has been the use of ammunition made of depleted uranium, meaning that we are already   in a modified and brutal "nuclear war."

But the world has become strangely unconcerned about what is going on.   This brings us to a situation where Iran finds itself in the crosshairs of nuclear armed weapons held by countries that are seemingly ever more willing to attack that country because it might develop even the capability of making nuclear weapons.   (We must remember that Iran sought and received   permission from the U.N. itself to develop nuclear fuel usage. The reaction to this stated intent has been the accusation that they will develop nuclear weapons.)

Well, if they did, so what?   Would that mean they would have the audacity to attack nations who possess nuclear submarines (any one of which could destroy all of the world's major cities!)   Does the entire world actually believe THAT?

Does it not matter that Iran has never attacked any nations in at least one hundred years?   Will the BIG ONE be triggered by   those who attack Iran, while casting aside the fact that several other nuclear-armed countries have a vested interest in NOT wanting Iran attacked?

Is the world oblivious of M.A.D.?    I'm scared.   Are YOU?    *
