This is the fourth post in the series of selfdefense articles. We have covered the biggest mistake you can make, the secret of winning against a bigger attacker and the secret of handling fear. This post is on the biggest challenge you face in selfdefense.

First it may be helpful to know a bit about violence.

Violence

Violence comes in varying degrees and types. They can be broadly categorised into four main groups:

  1. Behavioural
  2. Territorial
  3. Criminal
  4. Predatory

Behavioural violence occurs when he is trying to change or stop what you are doing.

Territorial violence happens when you encroach upon his domain.

Criminal violence is for profit, he just wants whatever it is he wants from you. Usually give that to him and the violence goes away.

Predatory violence is the most dangerous. You must have done something to piss him off. He wants a piece of you.

Things really happen fast in a physical confrontation. There are so many things happening. You may be getting agitated and fearful. You can go into denial, thinking this can't be happening to you. You may be desperately trying to talk your way out or trying to work out what's happening!

Escape is always the first rule. If you don't let your Monkey Brain take control, you might be able to see a way out. Unfortunately escape is not always an option. Then the first step is the most important, everything hinges on this first step:

You need to be proactive.

The Biggest Challenge

Violence takes time and effort to get there.

But when it erupts, it does so with frightening speed and ferocity.
