NOT JUST FOR THE JEWISH HOLY DAYS

The Jewish Day of Atonement.  As part of the Yom Kippur service a list of confessions (called Vidui) is recited/sung by the Congregation.  With each confessed sin, a person places her/his fist over their heart.  Here's an example:

We abuse, we betray, we are cruel.
We destroy, we embitter, we falsify.

For reasons relating to the Rabbi's Sermon during Rosh Hashanah, I felt compelled to create my own list.  I began by making some general comments.  Then, as you'll see, I got a little caught up in it.  After a few hours, I finally omitted some and said "enough."

I do feel better after venting.

My Additions to the Yom Kippur Confession - VIDUI.

We lie, we abet, we cover up
We dumb-down, we divert, we de-regulate
We drill, we do harm, we pollute
We overthrow, we arm, we privatize
We invade, we kill, we torture
We render, we disappear, we overwhelm
We wiretap, we list, we data-mine

(here's where I begin to get a bit carried away)

We govern for the wealthy, the investor, the corporation
We deride, we downsize, we destroy (social programs)
We spread fear, we spread hate, we spread greed
We lack empathy, curiousity, and humor
We are usurious, we are vitriolic, we are thoughtless
We allow poverty, abuse, and narrow-mindedness
We react as we're told; we follow without thought;
We allow abuse and injustice (when not aimed at us)

(More involved and losing the rhythm)

We privatize Commons (oil, gas, water, parklands, roads, prisons)
We blur separation of church and state
We order study groups when we already know the answers
We destroy our environment
We shred our Constitution
We allow corporate-owned media to provide the "news."
(We are grateful for fair and accurate reporting on cable comedy   shows)

We over-react to perceived problems
We are sometimes part of the problem
We are not always part of the solution

We govern for the good of the corporation
We ignore the needs of the people
We ignore poverty, abuse (physical, verbal, mental)
We allow private ownership of voting machines, and political "polling" games
We do not insist on  paper trails or software oversight

We do not verify, confirm, or investigate
    statements made in oversight hearings
action taken by our administration/legislature/the courts
the voting record of our representatives
the small print on voter information "guides."

We ignore the lessons of history when we are willing to
accept as true, no questions asked, information we receive
from government, mainstream media, party of choice.
support our government's position re foreign policy/leaders
continue the policy of "free" trade instead of advocating
           "fair" trade
    put off campaign finance reform

erase the successful accomplishments of the New Deal.

consider the Bush/Paulson solution (since they are part of the      problem), when it was tried - Depression and in Japan                  in 1998 - and failed both times.

don't consider FDR's New Deal solution (which worked; look up     STET on line)

I grew up in the 50s and 60s when you trusted your government and you accepted the authority without much complaint. I voiced my opposition to Viet Nam war, but didn't do much to show it. Life experiences and a love of reading (and the last 8 (more...)
