This announcement is a national "Call for Environmental Justice Milestones and Accomplishments" to be released as part of the Earth Day 2013 celebration at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, Texas Southern University in Houston. All items submitted will need to include hyperlinks. In keeping with tradition, the new milestone entries will be added to the previous EJ Milestones report. This tradition began in 2001 as part of the four-day Second National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit or Summit II, held in Washington, DC in October 2002, where the Environmental Justice Timeline-Milestones (1964-2002) report was released.
The 2002 report was the first to chronicle accomplishments of the U.S. Environmental Justice Movement. It was later updated in the 2007 United Church of Christ Toxic Wastes and Race at Twenty, 1987-2007 report and later as part of a W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant and an American Public Health Association Press book entitled Environmental Health and Racial Equity in the United States: Building Environmentally Just, Sustainable and Livable Communities (2011).
The most recent milestones are also published as a stand-alone report in the The State of Environmental Justice Since Summit II (2002-2011) produced for Earth Day 2011. Since the latest version of the report only goes up to April 2011, this new update seeks environmental justice milestones and accomplishments from that date through April 2013. Submissions are sought in such areas as: lawsuits, legal victories, and settlements; laws, executives orders, policies, and regulations; national awards and distinguished honors; reports, studies, and award-winning books; academic program and university-based centers; conferences and summits; formation of networks, partnerships, and collaborative; appointments to government and nongovernmental organizations; funding initiatives, and others.
