This is a brilliant, historically informed, first person observation and analysis.
The partnership of Hedges and Sacco works beautifully to describe and portray the disintegration of the US, as it shovels more and more Americans into third world, even slave status.
They start with the history of the way the US treated Native Americans, showing how that has become the template for how the corporate state is processing the poor, minorities and the middle class as it "harvests" the resources of the US.
The book shows, with heart-wrenching personal anecdotes, how this template of despoilation and destruction is hitting people of all races and cultures, rural and urban.
Finally, the book discusses the Occupy Wall Street phenomenon, from the perspective of revolution and the need for change that does not happen by people casting their votes.
Chris Hedges is a visionary who has seen through the corporate veil of congress, the White House and the justice system. If America is to survive to continue serving the nobler, democratic, freedom visions of the founding fathers, he is one of the few who see and speak about the way.
Joe Sacco is an illustrator, artist, cartoonist who draws pictures of the devastation that makes it incredibly real.
This is indeed an extraordinary, must read book.
In my interview with Chris Hedges, on my radio show, about this book, he told me that he does have some hope, that even semi-pro boxers, like he was, 30 years ago, sometimes defeat ringer pros, and even average citizens can sometimes achieve victory over the biggest corporate opposition.
