The 28th POTUS Woodrow Wilson is in the news because of his racism and support for Zionism.
The recent headlined article at OpEdNews, Woodrow Wilson's Racism And His Support For Zionism, is based on an essay by Jonathan D. Sarna, Woodrow Wilson was a hero to Jews. What should we do with his racism?
Sarna, a Brandeis University professor of American Jewish history, is trying to reconcile Wilson's racism with the Zionist belief that he was a hero to the Jews because of his support for the Balfour Declaration.
At the time Wilson remarked,
"To think that I, son of the manse [minister's house], should be able to help restore the Holy Land to its people." Subsequently, this decision made him as much a hero to Zionists, and American Zionists in particular, as he was a villain to African Americans.
Historians believe Woodrow Wilson supported the Balfour Declaration because he was a Christian fundamentalist who believed that God desired the Jews, whom Wilson understood to have been civilized through long residence in the West, to "return to their ancient home". The instruments for that return were the Balfour Declaration and the British mandate. The Palestinians were not even relevant to the issue for Wilson.
I would offer the following insights into the history of Wilson and the Balfour Declaration.
First, historians should be questioning his remark: "To think that I, son of the manse [minister's house], should be able to help restore the Holy Land to its people."
Wilson was the son of a minister and a Christian fundamentalist; therefore you would expect that he would know that the "return to their ancient home" was not ordained in the Bible. America's traditional churches in the 19th century would never allow a Jewish occupation of Jesus' homeland: the Jews in the Christian New Testament persecuted and crucified Jesus Christ.
A political state formed before the Messiah returns is diametrically opposite to the teachings of traditional Judaism, which holds that the return to Zion (Jerusalem) can only happen when the Moschiach (messiah) reveals the glory of the Lord (Adonai) to the whole world. [2]
The Diaspora was the dispersion of Jews among the Gentiles outside Palestine after the Babylonian Exile that took place in the 6th century BCE. "The Return" is not the end of the diaspora and is not allowed according to the Bible because the messiah wasn't in Palestine in 1948.
Zionism is not to be confused with Judaism:
- Zionism: an organization of Jews who believed the Jewish people needed a nation of their own to escape persecution.
- Judaism: A religion based on the Torah and the Talmud practiced collectively by Jews. A "Jewish state" is a violation of the teachings of Orthodox Judaism. [3]
Historians looking at "The Return" see the event as the silver lining around the dark cloud of desolation of two world wars and the Holocaust but "The Return" was the stated purpose of a Jewish political movement known as Zionism that arose in Europe in the late 19th century.
